'Cats Score Four in the Ninth in Comeback Win

GARY, Ind. - David Cooper hit a bases-loaded bunt single down the first base line to cap a four-run ninth inning that saw the RailCats come back from down 8-5 to win 9-8 on Tuesday night. The 'Cats have now won five out of seven, improving to 35-41 on the season.

With one out in the ninth, Mike Massaro started the rally with a single to right field. Chris Carrara and Ryan Babineau then drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Tomochika Tsuboi's fielder's choice pulled the 'Cats to within 8-6. Brian Kolb singled to right, scoring Carrara and cutting the deficit to 8-7. Craig Maddox came on to pinch-hit, beating out an infield single to load the bases. Zac Mitchell then drew a walk to tie the ballgame at 8-8. After a pitching change, David Cooper delivered the two-out bunt single down the line, beating everyone to first base and scoring Kolb for the game-winner.

The Cats jumped ahead in the first inning as Adam Klein walked, stole second and scored on Mike Massaro's RBI single.

Amarillo quickly answered with three runs on five hits in the top of the second against RailCats starter Morgan Coombs to take a 3-1 lead. Van Pope, Tyler Goodro and Chuck Lofgren hit consecutive RBI singles in the inning.

Gary would pull a run back in the bottom of the second on a run-scoring single by Zac Mitchell. Tim Alberts crushed a solo homer to left, high off the net behind the left field concourse, for the Sox in the top of the third to make it 4-2.

The 'Cats tied it in the fourth against Sox starter Cliff Springston. With the bases loaded, David Cooper was hit by a pitch and Klein added an RBI groundout to knot the game at four.

The Sox took the lead back in the fifth on a bases-clearing three-run double by Tyler Goodro. The RailCats plated a run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double by Ryan Babineau to cut the deficit to 7-5. In the seventh, the Sox added an insurance run with a two-out RBI single by pinch-hitter Derrick Pyles, putting them up 8-5.

Coombs surrendered seven runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings. The loss drops him to 4-8 on the season. For the Sox, Springston went 3 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on six hits.

Chase Johnson (3-2) took the blown save and the loss, allowing all four runs in the ninth. Tyler Deetjen (2-2) picked up the win for the RailCats, allowing a run in 2 1/3 innings of relief.

Game two of the series is on Wednesday night at 7:10. It is Wing it Wednesday, with 50 cent wings available in the Diamond Club. Will Krout (3-4, 3.81) will take the ball for the RailCats.
