Ruwe, Saints Shut Down RailCats
ST. PAUL, Minn. - Saints starter Kyle Ruwe retired the final 16 RailCats hitters in a complete game effort, limiting the 'Cats to one unearned run in the Saints 5-1 win over the RailCats on Monday night. The RailCats fell to 39-43 on the season.
The 'Cats jumped out early, as Adam Klein led off the game with an infield single and moved to second on a throwing error. Mike Massaro hit an RBI single to right to score Klein and give the RailCats a 1-0 lead. Ruwe would hold the RailCats scoreless on two hits the rest of the way. The final RailCats hit was Klein's single in the third inning, and the last batter to reach was Brian Kolb, who was hit by a pitch in the fourth.
Ruwe (2-1) gave up just four hits, walked one and struck out six. RailCats starter Will Krout (3-5) tossed an eight-inning complete game in a losing effort. In his second complete game of the year, Krout allowed five runs, four earned on 10 hits.
The Saints took the lead in the third inning on two-out RBI singles by Jim Rapoport and Willie Cabrera. Jake Krause hit an RBI groundout in the third to make it 3-1. Rapoport drove in another run with a sac fly in the seventh. Ronnie Bourquin hit a run-scoring double in the eighth to cap the scoring.
Game two of the three game series will be on Tuesday afternoon at 12:05. Stephen Hiscock (4-5, 2.87) will be on the bump for Gary.
