RailCats Score Six in Tenth to Take Series
ST. PAUL, Minn. - The RailCats scored six runs in the tenth inning to defeat the St. Paul Saints 14-8 on Wednesday night in the series rubber match. The RailCats (41-43) have won four consecutive series and are now six and a half games back of first place Wichita in the Central with 16 games left to play.
With the game tied at eight, Chris Carrara started the tenth with a single. Kenny Bryant and Brian Kolb walked to load the bases for Eric Suttle, who delivered an RBI single to left to give the RailCats the lead. Bryant also came in to score on the play on an error by the catcher. Zac Mitchell followed with a run-scoring single, and a throwing error brought home another run. Another run scored on an error before Carrara capped the inning with an RBI single. The 'Cats had four hits in the inning while the Saints committed four errors.
The RailCats had taken a 9-8 lead on Adam Klein's RBI single in the ninth inning, but Ole Sheldon hit a solo homer to dead center, his second of the game, in the bottom of the inning to send the game to extras.
The 'Cats jumped out to a 7-1 lead after three innings. Kolb, Mitchell, David Cooper, Klein and Mike Massaro each drove in runs during a five-run second and Craig Maddox hit his fourth homer of the year, a two-run shot in the third.
St. Paul battled back and eventually tied the game on an RBI double by Adam Frost in the sixth. Tanner Townsend scored on the play to make it a one-run game, and Frost came all the way in to score the tying run on an overthrow by Cooper.
Marco Gonzalez (3-2) blew the save in the ninth but picked up the win, while Chris Odegaard (3-8) gave up all six runs, one earned in the tenth for the loss.
The RailCats have an off day on Thursday and start a six-game homestand on Friday, when they welcome Sioux Falls to U. S. Steel Yard. It will be Fireworks Friday, with a spectacular post-game fireworks display. The 'Cats play 13 of their final 16 games at home.
