Wingnuts Outmuscle RailCats in 6-4 Win

WICHITA, Kan. - The RailCats outhit the Wingnuts but a pair of big home-runs gave Wichita a 6-4 win in the series opener. The loss drops the RailCats to 45-46 on the season and 7.5 games back of Wichita in the Central division. Both offenses stayed quiet after that until the sixth, when Babineau doubled and scored on a two-out RBI single by Zac Mitchell to make it 2-0.
RailCats starter Will Krout retired the first nine Wingnuts batters he faced and held them scoreless through five innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Ryan Khoury singled and Jake Kahaulelio doubled to put two aboard for John Rodriguez, who crushed a three-run shot over the scoreboard in left center to give Wichita a 3-2 edge. It was the first homer allowed by Krout since July 14 in Worcester, snapping a seven-start streak without allowing a home run. He had gone 63 2/3 innings without surrendering a long ball.
The 'Cats answered in the top of the seventh, as David Cooper hit a one-out double and Adam Klein scored him with a triple to tie the game at three. In the bottom of the inning, CJ Ziegler hit a two-out, two-run homer off of RailCats reliever Andrew Johnston to put the Wingnuts in front 5-3. After Dexter Carter came on in relief, Wilson Batista hit an RBI double off the wall in right center to make it 6-3.
Babineau added another RBI-single in the top of the 9th, making the final score 6-4. He finished 3-4 with 2 RBI and a run scored. Krout took a no-decision, allowing three runs on six hits in six frames. It was his eighth quality start in 14 outings. Blacksher also didn't factor in the decision after giving up three runs in 6 1/3 innings. Johnston (0-3) took the loss in relief, allowing three runs on two hits in 2/3 of an inning. Game two of the three-game series is Saturday at 7:05 PM. Stephen Hiscock (4-6, 3.23) will take on lefty Ryan Hinson (8-7, 4.86). |
