RailCats Rock Bears for Franchise-Record 20 Runs
The RailCats set a franchise record with 20 runs in a 20-10 thrashing of Newark on Friday night. The 20 runs breaks their previous record of 17, set on May 23 at Kansas City. The RailCats have won back-to-back games for the second time this season, and the first time since May 22-23.
Newark took a 1-0 lead in the first on Daryle Ward's RBI single. The RailCats came back with four runs in the bottom of the first, including an RBI hit for Rico Washington and a two-run single by Sean Smith.
The Bears answered with two in the second, but the 'Cats came right back with a run on a sac fly by Washington in the second. They plated four more runs in the third, as David Cooper hit an RBI single, Adam Klein ripped a two-run triple and Mike Massaro added a sac fly.
Kyle Haines hit a two-run homer in the fourth, his second of the season, to give the 'Cats a 12-5 lead. Newark scored two in the sixth and one in the seventh to pull within 12-8, but then Klein belted another two-run triple and Massaro hit another sac fly in the seventh to make it 15-8.
After Newark cut the lead to 15-10 in the eighth, the RailCats had their biggest inning in their final at-bat in the bottom of the inning. Cooper, Massaro and Mike Coles each hit run-scoring singles and Washington tacked on an RBI double to lift the 'Cats to the 20-run mark.
Massaro led the RailCats with four hits while Klein and Washington had three apiece. Klein and Washington eached drove in four runs and Klein scored four runs.
Chuck Lukanen (1-0) gave up three runs, two earned in 2 1/3 innings for the win. Starter Andrew Johnston gave up three runs on nine hits in three frames. Newark starter Mike Ness (1-1)surrendered 12 runs, 11 earned in five innings for the loss.
The third game of the four-game series will be Saturday night at 6:10 p.m. Stephen Hiscock (0-1, 4.15) will make his second start of the season for the RailCats. The first 1,000 fans will receive a fleece blanket giveaway and "The Bullet Man" David Smith will shoot himself out of a cannon across the field following the game.
