A Look at the Northern League
The Northern League is a professional independent baseball league consisting of six teams located in four states and one Canadian province. It is acknowledged to be the preeminent modern era independent league. Its success contributed to a growth in independent baseball that today includes seven leagues across the United States. The league was reformed in 1993 and was rebuilt on the tradition of town teams that existed at the turn of the century when the first Northern League existed. Today the six teams play a 96-game schedule divided into 48-game halves. Playoffs consist of a divisional five-game series, and a five-game championship series, matching the best of the Northern League. Northern League attendance increased from 2006 to 2007 and the Northern League will enter the 2008 season as the only professional baseball league below the Triple-A level in which all of its teams attracted an average of at least 3,600 fans per game in 2007.
