GARY, Ind. — The Gary SouthShore RailCats (25-19) defeated the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks (22-22) by a score of 5-3 on Monday evening. The RailCats’ victory marks their third straight and are a win away from their fifth-straight series victory.

After both teams managed just one hit through the first three innings, Fargo-Moorhead jumped in front with a three-run top of the fourth. Back-to-back singles by Devan Ahart and Keury De La Cruz gave the RedHawks runners on the corners to begin the inning. Josh Mazzola followed with an RBI groundout, scoring Ahart. K.D. Kong then drew an intentional walk before Trevor Adams singled home De La Cruz. With Kong moving to the third on the Adams single, Charlie Valerio brought in the final run of the game on an RBI fielder’s choice.

Gary cut the deficit to one with their first run of the series in the bottom of the fourth. Randy Santiesteban drew a five-pitch walk to start the frame before Wilfredo Gimenez brought Santiesteban around to score from first with an RBI double to the left field wall.

The RailCats rallied in the sixth to tie the game at 3-3. Reggie Wilson plated Gimenez with a one-out RBI single to pull the RailCats within one. Chase Harris then successfully squeeze bunted, allowing Ryan Fitzgerald to score to even the ballgame.

In the seventh, the RailCats took their first lead of the game when Santiesteban recorded an RBI fielder’s choice, scoring Colin Willis. Frank Martinez was safe at second with a throwing error from RedHawks pitcher Trey McNutt. Willis and Martinez hit back to back one-out singles to ignite the scoring opportunity. Gary added on to its lead with an RBI fielder’s choice by Fitzgerald to make the score 5-3.

Marshall Pautsch made his professional debut as the starting pitcher for the RailCats. He pitched three-plus innings, allowing two earned runs, on three hits, while striking out three.

Ryan Fritze (5-1) struck out a batter and walked one in a scoreless seventh to earn the victory. Carlos Diaz (3) pitched two scoreless innings in relief to pick up the save.

Fargo-Moorhead’s Tyler Alexander recorded a quality start by pitching six innings while giving up three earned runs. He walked four and struck out seven during the evening.

McNutt (0-2) surrendered the go-ahead and an insurance run in the seventh inning in relief.

Gary continues their seven-game homestand on Tuesday night at 6:10 p.m. vs. Fargo-Moorhead. Southpaw Braulio Torres-Perez (4-1, 4.40) faces right-hander Jose Almarante (2-3, 5.03) in the middle game of the series.
