GARY SOUTH SHORE RAILCATS MEDIA RELEASE
GARY, IN – The Gary SouthShore RailCats announced today that the club has signed outfielder Colin Willis and outfielder Cameron Newell for the 2017 American Association season.
Colin Willis, was signed by the RailCats on August 17th last season and played in 11 games hitting .231 with five RBI and a pair of stolen bases for the South Shore. Willis, a native of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, played college ball locally at Purdue North Central and spent time with both Gary and Lake Erie of the Frontier League in spring training last season.
The RailCats signed Roseburg, Oregon native Cameron Newell late in the offseason just prior to spring training, but he did not waste any time making a name for himself in NWI. Newell was the team leader at the plate through early part of the season hitting .303 and leading the team in extra base hits when he went the disabled list for the first of two times on July 2nd.
Newell would be limited to just 61 games due to nagging wrist injury but he hit .303 with 24 RBI and four stolen bases when the curtain closed on his 2016 season. Newell played collegiately at UC-Santa Barbra and was a 35th round pick by the Miami Marlins in 2015. Newell made two stops in 2015 with the Marlins at Batavia in the New York-Penn League and the Gulf Coast Marlins playing in 35 games with a .216 average and six RBI with both clubs.
2017 will mark the 16th season of RailCats Baseball in Northwest Indiana and the club will also celebrate 15 years playing at their current home “The Steel Yard”.
