Box Score

GARY, Ind. – The Gary SouthShore RailCats (40-32) scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game, but it was not enough as the Winnipeg Goldeyes (42-30) scored a run in the top of the 10th to take game three of the series by a final of 6-5. Winnipeg takes the season series after improving to 6-4 against Gary with one game remaining on Sunday.

Winnipeg’s first three men reached in the top of the 10th. David Rohm reached on a throwing error from Ryan Fitzgerald. Josh Romanski and Reggie Abercrombie followed with singles to load the bases before Shawn Pleffner hit the go-ahead sacrifice fly to left field to give the Goldeyes the 6-5 lead, and eventually the win.

The Goldeyes took the opening lead for the third straight game with an unearned run in the second. Abercrombie reached on a fielding error by shortstop Fitzgerald error to start the inning before a throwing error from Wilfredo Gimenez on a back pick attempt sailed into right field, allowing Abercrombie to go first to third. Pleffner then scored Abercrombie with a deep sacrifice fly to right field, giving the Goldeyes a 1-0 advantage.

The lead was extended to three when Pleffner launched a two-out, two-run home run to right center field in the top half of the sixth inning that scored Abercrombie, who reached base on a two-out single.

The RailCats were able to get on the board in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Cameron Newell led off the inning with a triple to left-center, and then scored on a RBI single from Randy Santiesteban to make the score 3-1.

Winnipeg added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning. Rohm led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on Josh Romanski’s single. Abercrombie knocked in Rohm on a double down the right field line. David Bergin then plated Romanski on a sacrifice fly to left field.

The RailCats cut the deficit in the eighth. Newell hit a one-out infield single and advanced to second when Santiesteban reached on an error. Frank Martinez followed with a RBI single to right field that allowed Newell to score his second run of the game.

Down to their final frame, the RailCats needed three to tie. Reggie Wilson led off the inning with a double. Cole Fabio singled that allowed Wilson to advance to third. Alex Crosby then singled in Wilson to make the score 5-3. Willis followed with a RBI double to left that scored Fabio to place runners on second and third with none out in the ninth. After Newell struck out, Kris Goodman, who was pinch running for Crosby, scored on Santiesteban’s sacrifice fly to make the score even at 5 to force extras.

Drasen Johnson (3-4) allowed an unearned run in the 10th inning on Saturday to pick up the loss. Winnipeg’s Ryan Chaffee (3-3) pitched a scoreless bottom of the 10th after allowing all three RailCat runs in the bottom of the ninth to pick up the victory. Alex Gunn got the start for Gary and pitched terrifically for the RailCats in a no-decision. He allowed three runs, two earned, in 6.1 innings of work. He allowed six hits while striking out three and walking none.

Gary and Winnipeg conclude their four-game series on Sunday afternoon at 2:10 p.m. Two-time All-Star Charle Rosario (8-5, 3.26) opposes Goldeyes southpaw Mitchell Lambson (5-2, 2.76) in the series finale.
