GARY, Ind. — The Gary SouthShore RailCats announced that the Miami Marlins purchased the contract of left-handed pitcher Carlos Diaz on Monday, August 7th. Diaz will report to the Jupiter Hammerheads of the Florida State League, the Class-A Advanced affiliate of the Marlins.
Diaz went 2-1 with four saves, four holds and a 3.83 ERA in 21 games (three starts) for the RailCats. Diaz led all Gary pitchers with a .164 opponents batting average and struck out 62 batters while walking just 17 in 42.1 innings. In 18 relief appearances, Diaz went 2-0 with a 2.30 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 31.1 innings.
Diaz recorded a hold in his American Association debut on May 27th with a perfect inning of relief vs. the Texas AirHogs and struck out five of the six batters he faced in his first save on May 23rd against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. Diaz didn’t allow a run in seven straight relief appearances (12.1 innings) from June 23rd to July 8th.
Diaz returns to affiliated baseball after previously pitching in the Cleveland Indians minor league system. Diaz spent two seasons in the Indians’ minor league system, reaching as high as the Arizona League (Rookie affiliate) back in 2013.
Diaz is the 28th player to have his contract purchased by a Major League team under manager Greg Tagert, and the first since Jose Gonzalez had his contract purchased by the Minnesota Twins on February 3rd.
Gary begins a three-game series vs. St. Paul on Monday night at 7:10 p.m. Aryton Costa (0-0, 6.00) opposes Saints’ right-hander Jason Hoppe (0-0, 6.32) in the series opener.
