GARY, Ind. – Gary’s (46-35) pitching staff continues to dominate the Sioux Falls Canaries (37-44) as the RailCats shutout the Canaries by a score of 2-0 on Wednesday. The RailCats have now won a season-high six straight games and are a season-best 11 games above .500.
The RailCats doubled their lead in the fifth on another RBI from Willis. Ryan Fitzgerald and Andy De Jesus led off the frame with back-to-back singles before Chase Harris advanced both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Crosby was then intentionally walked to load the bases, however, Willis made the Canaries pay with an RBI groundout to second, bringing homme Fitzgerald.
Kyle Chavez (1-0) picked up the victory in his RailCat debut as he did not allow a run. The right-handed sidewinder yielded just a hit and a walk in 1.1 innings of work.
Carlos Pinales (3) and Jake Matthys (5) each recorded holds for Gary. Pinales retired seven of the eight batters he faced in 2.1 scoreless innings of relief while Matthys struck out two of three batters he faced over one inning. Drasen Johnson (10) got out of a two-on, two-out jam in the ninth to pick up the save.
Daniel Minor recorded a no-decision in his home debut. The 26-year-old retired the first 10 batters he faced, allowed no hits, walked a batter and punched out a season-high six over 3.1 innings.
Miles Nordgren tossed a complete game for the second consecutive time in the defeat. Nordgren (5-6) allowed just two runs on six hits, two walks and three strikeouts.
Gary’s pitching staff has been dominant in two games this series by only allowing one run and only allowing 10 hits in 18 innings of play. The RailCats bullpen retired 12 straight batters to end tonight’s ballgame.
Gary concludes their three-game series vs. Sioux Falls on Thursday at 7:10 p.m. Right-hander Aryton Costa (2-1, 4.82) counters Canaries southpaw Joe Bircher (4-6, 4.79) in the series finale.
