GARY, Ind. — The Gary SouthShore RailCats had their three-game winning streak snapped on Stand Up to Cancer Night after being shutout by the Kansas City T-Bones, 8-0, in front of a season-high 6,358 fans at U.S. Steel Yard. Friday’s defeat also puts Gary in a first place tie with Kansas City in the Wild Card.

Kansas City (51-39) ended the scoreless drought with three runs in the fourth after being retired in order through the first three innings. Cedric Hunter led off the inning with a towering home run down the right field line, giving the T-Bones a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, All-Star first baseman Kevin Keyes singled to left before Dexter Kjerstad advanced Keyes to third with a double. Niko Vazquez then delivered a two-run double to right-center, scoring both Keyes and Kjerstad.

The T-Bones added two more runs in the sixth to go up by five. Keyes drew a walk to open the inning before Kjerstad singled to left, giving Kansas City runners on first and second. Chantz Mack followed with an RBI double to make it 4-0 before Kyle Petty increased the T-Bones’ lead to 5-0 with an RBI groundout.

Kansas City went up 8-0 with three more runs in the ninth. A leadoff single from Petty followed by a double from Tucker Pennell gave the T-Bones a pair of runners in scoring position to begin the inning. Jordan Edgerton then brought them both into score with a two-run double before Marcus Lemon brought home the final run of the evening with an RBI groundout.

Ryan Fitzgerald reached based a team-high three times and recorded half of Gary’s (51-39) hits. Ayrton Costa (2-4) was tagged with his third straight loss. Costa faced the minimum through three innings before allowing three runs on five hits (one home run) in 3.1 innings.

Luis Paula (6-2) recorded his second straight win over Gary with six shutout innings. The right-hander yielded two hits, a walk and struck out six.
