SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Kris Goodman’s RBI double in the top of the 10th gave Gary their fourth and final lead on Wednesday night as the RailCats topped the Sioux Falls Canaries, 5-4, at Sioux Falls Stadium. The 10th inning win improved Gary’s record to 10-6 in extras and keeps Gary one game behind Fargo-Moorhead and Kansas City for first in the Wild Card.
After the Canaries forced extras with a run in the bottom of the ninth, Ryan Fitzgerald drew a leadoff walk to open the top of the 10th. Andy De Jesus executed the sacrifice bunt, moving Fitzgerald up to second before Goodman came through with the go-ahead run on an RBI double to right-center, scoring Fitzgerald.
Sioux Falls (43-52) took the opening lead for the third straight game against Gary with a two-out run in the first inning. Blake Schmit reached second on a fielder’s choice before stealing third on the first pitch with Jabari Henry at the plate. Henry recorded his first of two RBIs on the night with an RBI single to left, bringing in Schmit to score from third.
Gary (53-42) took their first lead of the entire series on De Jesus’ two-out, two-run home run to right-center. Fitzgerald kept the inning alive with a two-out single to right before De Jesus blasted his second home run of the season.
The Canaries quickly tied the game at 2-2 on Burt Reynolds’ two-out blast to left-center. The homer was the left fielder’s 16th of the year and Sioux Falls’ third of the series.
The RailCats regained the lead with a run in the sixth. Reggie Wilson led off the inning with a single down the right field line before Joey Havralik moved Wilson up to second with a groundout to the right side of the infield. Wilson then advanced to third on a balk from Grady Wood before Colin Willis delivered an RBI single past a drawn in infield.
Henry tied the game at 3-3 with a solo home run to begin the bottom of the seventh. The home run was Henry’s league-high 25th home run of the season and his second in as many days.
Alex Crosby gave the RailCats the lead for the third time with a solo home run to right with one out in the eighth. The home run was Crosby’s third of the season and the last of four total home runs hit on the evening.
Sioux Falls forced extras with a run in the bottom of the ninth. Schmit and Henry led off the inning with back-to-back singles before Jacobs advanced Schmit to third with a flyout to right. Patrick Fiala then tied the game at 4-4 with a sacrifice fly to center, bringing in Schmit.
Gary concludes their four-game road trip against Sioux Falls on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Southpaw Alex Gunn (8-5, 3.58) makes his league-high-tying 24th start of the year against Canaries right-hander Troy Marks (3-8, 5.66) in the RailCats final regular-season road game.
