SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Gary allowed a season-high 16 hits on Saturday at Sioux Falls Stadium and fell to the Sioux Falls Canaries, 12-4, in eight innings for the second straight game. Right as the eighth inning completed, a heavy downpour of rain began to fall and the game was called prior to the ninth inning due to the rain and unplayable field conditions.
Sioux Falls (12-9) put up five runs in an inning for the second straight night to take a 5-0. With runners on the corners and no outs in the bottom of the second, Trae Santos belted a towering three-run homer over the right-center wall for the first three runs of the contest. Mitch Glasser and Kevin Taylor delivered the final two runs of the inning with back-to-back two-out RBI singles. Sioux Falls brought 10 to the plate in the frame, had the first four hitters reach and recorded seven hits in the inning.
Gary (10-10) cut the deficit to four on Evan Marzilli’s two-out, two-run double down into the right field corner in the top of the third. Prior to Marzilli’s two-run double, Randy Santiesteban reached on a two-out single before Colin Willis extended his season-high-tying on-base streak to 13 games with a double.
The RailCats trimmed the Canaries lead to three with a run in the sixth. Wilfredo Gimenez doubled to right-center with one out before moving up to third on a passed ball from Canaries catcher Adrian Nieto. Raymond Jones followed Gimenez with a sacrifice fly to left.
Gary added their final run in the top of the eighth. Willis drew a leadoff walk before stealing second. Three batters later, Jones brought Willis home with a two-out, opposite-field RBI single.
The Canaries took their biggest lead of the series at 12-4 with an six-run bottom of the eighth. Ebert delivered his second and third RBIs of the evening with a two-run single before a two-out throwing error from Tom Walraven at third allowed Sioux Falls to score two more. Kevin Taylor delivered the final runs of the game with a two-out, two-run opposite-field homer.
Robbie Coursel (2-2) was charged with his second straight loss after allowing five runs (all in the second inning) over 1.2 innings. The right-hander yielded five hits, walked one and hit one.
Frank Moscatiello yielded one run over 2.1 innings of relief while Ryan Thurston retired six of the seven batters he faced in two scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Kaleb Fontenot threw the final two innings for Gary, allowing six runs (two earned) on five hits.
Former MLB pitcher Taylor Hill recorded his second straight win and quality start for Sioux Falls. The right-hander allowed three runs on seven hits, hit two batters, walked one and struck out two over seven innings.
Gary and Sioux Falls play one another for the final time during the regular season on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. RailCats’ left-hander Trevor Lubking (4-1, 0.99) goes for his league-high fifth win against Canaries’ right-hander Sam Bragg (1-1, 7.58) in the series finale.
