Professional Career


The 2019 season was Welz' first with the Gary SouthShore RailCats. In his last campaign, he got 89 at-bats across 39 games. In those chances, he slashed .169/.372/.202. He was able to get 15 hits and three doubles while driving in four runs. One of the strengths he showed was good discipline and vision, as he was able to draw 18 walks across the course of the season.


In 2018, Welz re-signed with the Evansville Otters of the Frontier League on 3/26. He slashed .214/.301/.305/.606 with 3 HR and 15 RBIs in 45 games and tied a career-high with eight stolen bases. He failed to stay healhty, being placed on the Injured List three separate times.


Welz played in 40 games with the Mobile BayBears (Double-A Affiliate) of the Texas League in 2017. Later that year, he signed his first Independent Professional Baseball (IPBF) contract with the Evansville Otters in August of 2017.


Welz split the 2016 season bouncing around the Los Angeles Angels farm system between the Burlington Bees (Class-A Affiliate) of the Midwest League, the Inland Empire 66ers (Class-A Advanced Affiliate) of the California League and the Arkansas Travelers (Double-A Affiliate) of the Texas League in 2016.


After college, Welz signed with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim as an undrafted free agent following his senior season at Texas Southern on 8/2/15. He got six hits in 28 at-bats across in seven games with the Arizona League Angels in 2015.

Texas Southern

After his time at Solano, Welz transferred to Texas Southern University in 2014. There, he was a two-year starter at Texas Southern form 2014-15. He was named to various honors, including Second Team All-Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) as a junior in 2014.

Welz Attended Solano Community College as a freshman and sophomore from 2013-14.
