GARY, IND. — The Gary SouthShore RailCats activated right-handed pitcher Frank Moscatiello from the 7-Day Disabled list before Friday’s series opener vs. the Milwaukee Milkmen. He has missed the last six games but will the get the starting nod tonight, with first pitch slotted for 7:10 p.m. In order to make room for Moscatiello on the active 23-man the RailCats have placed infielder Will Savage on the 7-day DL.

Moscatiello signed his first American Association contract with Gary back on June 3 and is 0-2 with a 6.89 ERA in 14 games (three starts). The Rocky Point, N.Y., native made his first 11 appearances of the season out of the bullpen before moving into the starting rotation on July 15.

The 23 year old threw three scoreless innings of relief in his American Association debut on June 4 vs. Chicago and struck out a season-high six batters over three scoreless innings out of the bullpen in his most recent relief appearance on July 10 also against the Dogs. Moscatiello made his first American Association start on July 15 vs. Fargo-Moorhead and yielded just an infield single and a walk over four shutout innings.

The first-year RailCat began the year with the Rockland Boulders of the Can-Am League and made one relief appearance with the club before signing with Gary. Moscatiello signed his first professional baseball contract with Rockland in 2018 and went 4-3 with one save and a 2.79 ERA in 25 games (four starts). In two postseason appearances with Rockland he allowed one run on four hits and two walks while striking out six batters over 4.2 innings.

In 61.1 innings, the right-hander allowed 25 runs (19 earned) on 58 hits and 33 walks while striking out 64 batters. Moscatiello made his professional baseball debut on June 15, 2018, vs. the Dominican Republic National Team and struck out all three hitters he faced. Two days later, Moscatiello recorded his first professional win against the D.R. National Team after allowing just one run on four hits and two walks while striking out four over five innings.

Meanwhile, this will be Savage’s third trip to the DL. The 24 year old was injured in warmups prior to yesterday’s game; he was hit in the head when a grounder took a bad hop off the infield dirt. And since he was placed on the DL on both May 29 and June 8 with concussion-like-symptoms, the team doesn’t want to take any chances and placed him on the DL for precautionary purposes.

In his second season with the ballclub, Savage has appeared in 37 games and is hitting .236 with five RBI, 25 runs scored, 16 walks and five stolen bases.

Friday’s game vs. Milwaukee is Dairy Free Night, presented by So Delicious Dairy Free. The first 500 fans will receive a chocolate non-dairy “milk” as it’s the Milkmen’s first trip ever to US Steel Yard. Stay in your seats after the conclusion of tonight’s game because it’s another Fireworks Friday, presented by Fifth Third Bank.
