‘Cats Have Twelve Lives, Win Rubber Match in Extras
JACKSON, TN- In the rubber match at the Ballpark at Jackson, the Gary SouthShore RailCats (22-27) overcame the Winnipeg Goldeyes (22-25) in a twelve-inning, 3-2 thriller for the RailCats seventh extra-inning victory of the year.
In the top of the twelfth frame, Daniel Lingua scampered across the plate to take the late lead before Tasker Strobel finished things off in the final square to record his first win of the year.
There’s a new sheriff in town. Tasker Strobel was stupendous in relief for the RailCats, throwing four innings of scoreless, one-hit baseball with a walk and two strikeouts as Strobel’s ERA ducked to 2.68 on the season.
In the epitome of a team effort, 18 RailCats contributed in the win, the most for any RailCats team this season.
In the third, Jacob Talamante chunked a single to left, scoring Tommy McCarthy for the first run of the game to give the ‘Cats a lead. Talamante’s 2-for-6 day at the plate was the first multi-hit effort of his professional career.
After the Goldeyes got on the board with a Jay Gonzalez two-out, infield single in the fifth, the North division foes were tied heading into the late innings.
To give the RailCats a 2-1 lead, Jackson Smith blasted a bomb over the right-field wall, his second home run of the season, as the ‘Cats jumped back on top in the seventh.
Winnipeg tied things up in the eighth on a sac-fly, setting the table for the eighth extra-inning contest the RailCats have played in this year. The win in the twelfth marks the ‘Cats league-leading seventh extra-inning victory of the season. The American Association single-season record is 11 extra-inning wins.
Goldeyes starter Jorge Gonzalez threw seven innings of two-run baseball, allowing eight hits and two walks while striking out six in a no decision.
In his professional debut, John Sheaks tossed 2.1 scoreless innings as the RailCats’ opener, allowing three hits as he fanned four.
Cas Silber had five innings in relief for Gary SouthShore with two runs, two walks and five strikeouts.
After a day off on the road tomorrow, the Gary SouthShore RailCats will continue their 10-game road trip with three against the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks at Newman Outdoor Field starting on Tuesday, July 12.
