(Gary, IN) The Gary SouthShore RailCats started a new series for their second leg of the homestand against the Sioux Falls Canaries. The RailCats headed into the game at 37-52 and the Canaries at 44-46 and lost a series to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks the day prior. Dominic Cancellieri went for the RailCats as the Canaries turned to RHP Chase Gearing.  

 

Korry Howell led off the bottom of the first with a home run to left field to set a new career high. Josh Rehwaldt tied the game in the top of the second on an unearned run to Cancellieri. Andy Nelson gave the RailCats the lead back the next half inning. After two innings it was RailCats leading 2-1. 

 

Josh Rehwaldt in the top of the fourth hit his 19th home run over the yellow line in center field to even out the game at two. Gary would take the lead when Marc Flores smashed a home run over the right field wall, Joe Suozzi doubled over the head of Joe Vos in center and Nick Podkul ran home all the way from first. It was RailCats 6 and Canaries 2.  

 

Gary kept on the attacking by scoring a run in the bottom of the sixth and Flores in the bottom of the eighth hit his second home run of the night, it was now 8-2. The Canaries in the top of the ninth clawed back into the game when Scott Combs belted a two-run home run and Mike Hart had an RBI single. Jacob Coats would settle in and strike out Rehwaldt and got Jabari Henry to ground out to short to give the RailCats an opening win in the series. 8-6 final from the Steel Yard. 

 

The RailCats match their win total from last year, getting to 38-52 while the Canaries fall to 44-47.  The ‘Cats and Sioux Falls meet back up Saturday for the second game of the series with LHP Dawson Lane making the start and the Canaries will pitch Josh Caravalho. First pitch scheduled for 4:00.
