Medina Makes His Way to The Steel Yard

Gary, IN – The Gary SouthShore RailCats add to their already impressive pitching staff with the signing of Yeison Medina.

Medina, 29, brings a wealth of professional experience to the South Shore.  Originally from the Dominican Republic, the St. Louis Cardinals signed him as an international free agent in 2013 and assigned him to their Dominican Summer League affiliate.  He dominated in his first season, earning a 1-1 record along with a 1.26 earned run average, 35 strikeouts, a 1.15 WHIP, and six saves in 17 relief appearances spanning 28.2 innings.

The next year, the Cardinals brought Medina to the United States, and he pitched an additional five seasons in their organization, advancing as high as the Double-A Springfield Cardinals in 2018.  He was at his best as a member of the Single-A Peoria Chiefs in 2017 as he emerged as the team’s closer.  In 32 relief appearances over 44.1 innings, he went 5-0, sported a 2.03 ERA and 1.30 WHIP, fanned 74 batters, and notched 11 saves.

Following his time in the Cardinals system, Medina signed with the River City Rascals of the Frontier League in 2019 and helped them capture the league championship in their final year of existence.  After not pitching in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he split time with the New Jersey Jackals, also of the Frontier League, and the Idaho Falls Chukars in the Pioneer League.
