Middle Innings Prove Costly in RailCats Loss

Sioux City, IA — The Sioux City Explorers (14-17) caught fire in the middle innings, and that proved too much for the Gary SouthShore RailCats (14-18) as they fell to a 6-3 defeat in the series finale.

The Explorers initially pulled ahead in the bottom of the second, as the bottom of the order stepped up to score the game’s first run. Following a single and an error, second baseman Delvin Zinn delivered a double to put Sioux City on the board. They managed to load the bases with one out later in the frame, but RailCats starter Edward Cuello clutched up and recorded two consecutive outs to hold the opposition to just the one tally.

Pitching took over for the next couple of frames, but Gary SouthShore found their groove offensively in the top of the fifth as they played small ball to strike for three runs. Victor Nova drew a walk to kick off the rally, and after stealing a base, Will Decker advanced him to third on a single before a Daniel Lingua sacrifice fly brought him home and leveled the score at one.

Gio Díaz then coaxed free pass himself and stole second placing multiple runners in scoring position. A balk permitted another run to score, and Francisco Del Valle followed up by legging out an infield single to provide Gary SouthShore a 3-1 edge.

However, their advantage was short-lived. Sioux City brought home four runs in the bottom of the fifth through an RBI double and three-run home run, restoring their lead at 5-3.

The very next inning, the Explorers added on an insurance tally, increasing their middle-inning cushion. Delvin Zinn picked up a one-out triple and came around to score on a Miguel Sierra sacrifice fly, moving their lead to 6-3 and supplying their bullpen with the run support they needed to see the game through.

From that point forward, two Sioux City relievers combined to shut the RailCats down, not allowing a single hit over the final three innings to secure the victory.

The RailCats return to The Steel Yard tomorrow at 6:45 p.m. as they open a three-game weekend series against the Lake Country DockHounds. All the action will be streamed on aabaseball.tv and broadcast over the radio on 95.9 WEFM and the Gary SouthShore RailCats Broadcast Network via the Mixlr app.
