A veteran presence behind the plate, Carlos Martinez joins the RailCats for his first season on the South Shore in 2023.

Though new to the American Association, this is not his first experience in MLB Partner League baseball, as he spent last season in the Frontier League.

The Atlanta Braves initially signed the Cartagena, Colombia native Martinez as an international free agent in 2012 and placed him with their Dominican Summer League affiliate the next year to begin his professional career.  After making his way stateside to the Gulf Coast League in 2014, he steadily progressed through the organization, earning at least one promotion in all but one season from 2015-2021, ultimately reaching the Triple-A Gwinnett Stripers in 2021.

Martinez joined the Aigles de Trois-Rivières in 2022 and immediately became one of the Frontier League’s best backstops.  His .336 batting average ranked him seventh in the league, a .595 slugging percentage placed him 10th, and his .415 on-base percentage put him in 12th.  To accompany his remarkable slash line, Martinez registered 16 home runs, 62 runs batted in, 83 hits, 16 doubles, 30 walks to only 29 strikeouts, 55 runs scored, and 147 total bases.  As a result of his efforts, he earned the role of East Division catcher during the 2022 Frontier League All-Star Game.
