RailCats Agree to a Deal with Veteran Right-Hander
The Gary SouthShore RailCats announced that they have agreed to terms with pitcher Deyni Olivero.
Olivero is 25 years old and hails from the Dominican Republic. The hurler was signed on with the Arizona Diamondbacks as an international free agent. He started his professional career in 2016 at the age of 18.
Olivero would go on to be recognized as an All-Star in 2018 and 2019 and was named the Northwest League Pitcher of the Year as a member of the Hillsboro Hops. That year he went 8-3, with an impressive 2.09 ERA, and struck out 42 batters.
“Deyni brings us seven years of experience as starting pitching in the Diamondbacks farm system,” said manager Lamarr Rogers. “Having spent the last two seasons in Double A and Triple A, his understanding and knowledge of pitching to hitters of higher levels adds value to our RailCats starting pitching rotation.”
The northpaw made it as far as Triple-A in the Diamondbacks organization, and in seven years with Arizona he appeared in 100 games in which 87 of them were starts.
As the season nears closer, Olivero joins a RailCats roster that is being assembled before their opening day game against the Chicago Dogs on May 10.
The RailCats 2024 season begins at the Steel Yard on Friday, May 17 vs Lake Country. Season tickets packages and group outings for the 2024 season can be reserved by calling 219-882-2255 or emailing [email protected]
