RailCats Bats Explode to Snap Nine-Game Skid

GARY, Ind. – The Gary SouthShore RailCats (24-37) erupted at the plate to snap a nine-game losing streak with a 12-3 victory over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (35-27) at the Steel Yard in Gary, Indiana.

The RailCats’ eighteen hits marked a new a season-high and the nine-run margin of victory ties the second largest of the year. Top to bottom, everyone in the lineup contributed as all nine starters reached base safely once and eight of nine reached safely more than once.

The scoring started early and often, as the ‘Cats took a 2-0 lead through four innings as Jacob Talamante’s hits plated runs in the first and second. Talamante finished the game with a 3-for-5 day with two doubles, three RBI and a run scored.

Two more would score for the RailCats before Fargo-Moorhead tacked on one in the fourth, but the game came to a halt as the rain poured down in what turned into a delay that lasted an hour and seven minutes.

After the delay, the RailCats picked up right where they left off and put up three more in the sixth, highlighted by a two-RBI base hit by Tom Walraven who went 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored.

The RedHawks’ attempt at a comeback fell short with two more runs in the top of the eighth as the RailCats would pull away in the bottom half. A solo home run by Jesus Marriaga led off the bottom half-inning to spark a five-run inning and punctuate the victory.

Starting pitcher Yoel De Leon threw 4.1 scoreless innings in a no-decision. The win goes to reliever Tasker Strobel for his 3.1 innings of work.

Nick Garcia entered the game with two outs in the eighth in a 7-3 game with the tying run on-deck and finished the game to mark a four-out save.

With the series split through two, the decider between the Gary SouthShore RailCats and Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks is scheduled for tomorrow, July 25 at 2:10 p.m. at the Steel Yard in Gary, Indiana.
