(Gary, IN) The RailCats, coming off a series win and a doubleheader sweep of the Lake Country DockHounds went into the off-day making another addition to their team signing former Florida Marlin and Sioux City Explorer, Osvaldo Martinez. 

Martinez is a 38-year-old from Puerto Rico that was drafted by the Marlins in the 2006 out of Porterville College in California. In 2010 he made it to the show with Florida and plated in a combined 34 games over 2010 and 2011. The third baseman also played in the minor leagues for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago White Sox, Atlanta Braves, Baltimore Orioles and the Chicago Cubs. Martinez was featured in 1098 games in the minor leagues for those listed organizations. 

Martinez first made his way to the American Association in 2021 with the Cleburne Railroaders where he hit .315 and had 14 home runs. He would spend two years in Sioux Falls with the Canaries and most recently was with the Explorers in 2024. In 84 games for the X’s he hit at a .291 average with a .367 OBP and had five home runs and was named to the All-Star Team.

The veteran has played in a combined 329 games in the AA with 379 hits, 27 home runs, penciling in a .290 batting average and a .749 OPS. 

“Martinez brings a lot to the table for our club.” RailCats Manager Jeff Isom said. “He is a veteran who has been to the playoffs before in our league, he can hit the cover off the ball and play some solid defense.” 

The RailCats will hit the road tomorrow to begin a series against the first-place Milwaukee Milkmen. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Franklin Field. 

The RailCats will return home for a weekend series against the Kane County Cougars. Friday will be Union Night, and Sunday will be Sensory Awareness Day, with the RailCats wearing specialty jerseys that will be auctioned off.
