Gary, IN – The Gary SouthShore RailCats have re-signed pitchers Edward Cuello, Chris Erwin, Yesion Medina, Aaron Phillips, Jared Price, Reyson Santos, and John Sheaks for the 2023 season.
Cuello, 24, will return to Gary SouthShore for a second season. The right-hander from the Dominican Republic started 11 games last season. He posted a 3-6 record and finished the year with 46 strikeouts in 46.1 innings pitched. He previously spent four seasons in the Los Angeles Dodger organization reaching as high as Triple A (Oklahoma City).
Erwin, 27, comes back to the RailCats for a third season, and fourth as a professional. He split time between the starting rotation and bullpen in 2022. He finished with a 3-5 record and an ERA of 4.01. Of his 20 appearances, 15 were starts which ranked fourth on the pitching staff. He also recorded 88 strikeouts good for third on the team.
Medina, 30, returns to Gary SouthShore for a second season and his tenth as a professional. He made 26 appearances after signing midway through the season in 2022. The righty finished 18 games out of the bullpen and finished second on the team with four saves. The Dominican Republic native previously spent five seasons in the St. Louis Cardinals organization.
Phillips, 26, re-signs for a third season with the RailCats. He led the RailCats with 36 appearances in 2022, all but one coming out of the bullpen. He finished with a 3-3 record while sporting a 4.14 ERA over 63 innings of work. Phillips spent four seasons in the San Francisco Giants organization before coming to Gary SouthShore in 2021.
Price, 28, will return to Gary SouthShore for a second season. He made nine appearances out of the bullpen and finished six of them. The right-hander was limited due to injury. The 2023 season will be his fifth as a professional.
Santos, 24, returns to Gary SouthShore for a second season signing late during the 2021 season. The Dominican Republic native pitched 8.1 innings and posted a 3.24 ERA in nine appearances out of the bullpen. He spent four seasons in the New York Mets organization most recently with the St. Lucie Mets.
Sheaks, 26, comes back to the RailCats for his third professional season. He made 18 appearances, all starts, which was tied for second on the staff. In 99 innings of work, he struck out 74 batters which ranked fifth on the team.
“We’re excited to welcome back the core group of our pitching staff,” said General Manager Anthony Giammanco. “It is a good mix of guys that were mid-season acquisitions and guys that were here for the entire 2022 season.
