RailCats Roll Past Goldeyes for First Win in 2023

Gary, IN – The Gary SouthShore RailCats performed at the highest level in all facets of the game as they shut out the Winnipeg Goldeyes 10-0, to record their first win of the 2023 campaign.

Though it took a couple innings for the RailCats to warm up their bats, they burst out in the bottom of the third as they fired for five runs. Thomas Greely and Daniel Lingua strung together back-to-back singles and recorded a steal each before a Michael Woodworth walk loaded the bases. A force out at home plate kept a run of the board momentarily, but Jesus Marriaga followed up by grooving a double down the right field line to clear the bases and put Gary SouthShore ahead 3-0.

Consecutive singles from Emmanuel Tapia and LG Castillo reloaded the bags, and Francisco Del Valle came through as he lifted a two-run single to center field, increasing the RailCats’ edge to five.

Two innings later, Gary SouthShore’s lineup caught fire once again. Gio Díaz coaxed a leadoff walk before Marriaga and Tapia registered singles to re-fill the bases for LG Castillo. He made sure to capitalize on the situation and roped a double to the left field wall, plating another three runs and pushing the RailCats advantage to 8-0.

While the offense provided a comfortable cushion, Harrison Francis held the Goldeyes lineup at bay. Throughout his five-inning start, he did not give up a single hit, walking two and striking out seven. His impressive efforts on the mound earned a win, his first of the season and sixth of his RailCats career.

Upon Francis’ departure, the bullpen picked up right where he left off. Julio Vivas entered in the top of the sixth and faced the minimum in his lone inning of work, and though Jack Eisenbarger surrendered Winnipeg’s only hit of the contest, he worked out a bases loaded jam in the seventh before tossing a perfect eighth to preserve the shutout.

Even with a comfortable lead, the RailCats continued to add to it in the bottom of the eighth. Dorssys Paulino stroked a leadoff double, and two batters later, Lingua recorded a two-bagger to bring him home. Woodworth then reached on an infield single and Díaz collected another walk to generate another bases-loaded opportunity, and once again, Marriaga took advantage. A sacrifice fly chased Lingua in to score, propelling the ‘Cats to double-digits in the run column.

As Gary SouthShore stood three outs away from victory, DJ Wilkinson took over on the mound, making his professional debut. He set the Goldeyes down in order, ending the day with two strikeouts, to hammer down the victory.

The RailCats will go for the series win as they take on the Goldeyes tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. at The Steel Yard. You can catch the contest via stream on aabaseball.tv, on the radio on 95.9 WEFM, or through the Gary SouthShore RailCats Broadcast Network on the Mixlr app.
