RailCats Sign Region Native Edwards

Gary, IN – The Gary SouthShore RailCats continue to build their roster ahead of the 2022 season with the signing of Kea’von “K.V.” Edwards.

Edwards, who grew up nearby in Hammond, was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 30th round of the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft, but instead decided to attend Cowley County Community College in Arkansas City, KS.  Over his two seasons as a Tiger, he batted .360 with 26 home runs, 117 runs batted in, 146 hits, 118 runs scored, and 27 stolen bases in 112 total games.

Edwards received Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) East Division Freshman of the Year, All-KJCCC East Division First Team, and All-National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region IV Second Team honors in 2017 while leading Cowley County to the NJCAA World Series.  The very next season, he earned another set of All-KJCCC East Division First Team and All-NJCAA Region IV Second Team awards.

Following his two stellar college seasons, the Rays again selected Edwards in the 36th round of the 2018 MLB Draft.  This time, he signed with the team and played three seasons in their organization.

“K.V. Edwards comes recommended from a high-level MLB contact who know him from his time in the Rays organization,” manager Lamarr Rogers said.  “I’m hoping that with a fresh start in Gary and the chance to play close to home, he can realize those talents that got him drafted in the first place.”

The RailCats 2022 season begins at the Steel Yard on Friday, May 20 vs Lincoln Saltdogs. Season tickets packages and group outings for the 2022 season can be reserved by calling 219-882-2255 or emailing [email protected]
