(Gary, IN) With two weeks to go before the first game of the 2024 season, the RailCats made another move, this time to sign outfielder Brandon Fields to his first professional contract.
Fields was a two-sport athlete at Dr. Phillips High School in the Magical city of Orlando, Florida. As a baseball player, he stood out, hitting for a .359 batting average in 59 games with eight home runs. Fields was regarded as the number 9 outfielder recruit nationally by Perfect Game.
The 23-year-old spent his freshman year in the SEC with South Carolina; in 2022, he would go the Junior College route and sign on with the State College of Florida. Fields was penciled into the lineup every day, and it paid dividends to the Manatees. The slugger would hit 13 doubles, seven triples, and nine home runs in 54 contests.
Fields would make Lakeland, Florida, his home this past season as he attended Southeastern University. As a member of the Fire baseball program, he enjoyed a .411 on-base percentage, adding on 11 stolen bases and sending four baseballs over the fence.
Fields concluded the 2023 season as a late summer addition for the La Crosse Loggers of the Northwoods League and had four doubles and three home runs in 10 games, and then he settled into the MLB Draft League with the Frederick Keys.
The RailCats Home Opener is set for May 17, 2024. For season ticket packages and group and hospitality offerings for the 2024 season, call 219-882-2255 or visit railcatsbaseball.com.
