The Gary SouthShore RailCats announced that they agreed to a contract with Gio Diaz, a significant contributor from last season. Diaz, who was born in Chicago, Illinois, is just 25 years old.
Diaz attended St. Mary’s College in Moraga, California. When he arrived at the program, the base-stealing threat got instant playing time and picked up a crucial RBI to send the Gaels to the WCC tournament. In 2020, he started the season batting .396 with a .442 OBP and had 19 hits in 13 games before the season abruptly ended.
In 2021, Diaz signed his first professional contract with the Washington Nationals, and he walked more than he struck out in his time in the minor leagues. The following year, he became a member of the Pioneer League with the Rocky Mountain Vibes; he got into 88 games and slashed .394/.446/.463 and had a .909 OPS.
Diaz became a RailCat last year and led the team in various offensive categories, such as batting average (.319), hits (115), and stolen bases (37). The 37 stolen bases set a new mark for the ‘Cats, surpassing a 20-year record held by Billy Brown, who had 32.
“Gio is a “Ball Player”! His ability to get on base, steal, and play multiple positions made him an asset to the team last season.” Gary Manager Lamarr Rogers said. “He ranked among the top hitters in the league, and from his calm but tenacious personality, I’d think he feels he has more to prove this season. I’m excited to welcome Gio back to the club.”
